Knowing First: What all is cloud computing?

In last couple of years, cloud computing has really emerged as a new business model and it has changed fortunes for many companies. If you have shifted yourself to cloud, there is no reason to have physical infrastructure.

  •  Software as well as hardware needs are met by providers who offer cloud computing through renting them out. One can take virtual computers on rent to run their applications. This allows share or access of data through internet (cloud).
  • Websites which are hosted in cloud have their webpages served through those servers which are closer to IP location of user. Thus, another benefit of cloud is that with cloud computing load time increases significantly.

Location of Hosting and SEO

Those who are into SEO know that location of server as well as TLD (Top Level Domain) plays a decisive role to get geographically targeted visitors. TLD represents origin of website (e.g: for India) for search engines (like Google, Yahoo etc). IP of hosted server also plays an important role as search engine bots look at site’s IP to determine location of server. If needs to do his SEO for UK, I would recommend going for domain and UK based hosting provider rather than his site being hosted in Asia-Pacific or US. Even Google allows you to set geo-location to target specific country.

Impact of Cloud Computing on Location

Cloud computing is changing the location factor of hosting which impacts SEO too. As in cloud, your data is distributed at various servers.  Sites which are hosted in cloud often have separate versions (for UK, AU, US). But as these sites are same for search engines, they often start competing with each other. Now, based on link building campaigns, the site which gets highest authority outranks those which have low authority. e.g. If UK version has most authority, it would outrank US version for US market.

In 2010 with Google Caffeine update for Google algorithm, page speed became an important factor in SEO and it started to govern ranks which Google gives to sites. Pages which load faster tend to get higher rank than their counterparts. This affected schema for many sites which aim to rank in highly competitive market. For these reasons, cloud has emerged as a boon to such people. Sites operating in cloud have shown to load faster which improved time required for page loading.

Google’s Take on Cloud Computing

At present, Google seems to promote cloud computing. Matt Cutts, the most publically available face of Google, mentioned “Why cloud services rock”. He also commented “As more people get comfortable with online computing, more of them will choose to store their data from onsite hardrives and store it in the “cloud”. As a result searching in the cloud for relevant information will become increasingly important”.

I feel as more and more people adapt cloud computing, search engines may have to tweak their algorithms to take cloud factor into account. It will revolutionize way in which country/ language specific sites operate currently.
